WordPress 2.5.1 update, except fixes has issues too

I’d like to remain silent but I certainly can’t. Despite Matt’s attempt for justification through commenting on my previous post about latest WordPress update, again facts are on my side. Four days after the availability of this update, the first issues show up on the stage, one of which could affect all users with enabled registrations plus single author blogs, and the others issues, well a little bit of small complains.

Seen on my Dashboard feeds, Weblog Tools Collection reports about a solved yet unprovided fix for the scenario when a user tries to reset his password, the password reset link sent by email from the system seems to not work giving out the error message “Sorry, that key does not appear to be valid.

A user named Kuja Jhay wonders how the “Please update now” strip is still showing up even after I’ve upgraded to WP 2.5.1?

A Geekologist called Jim Dicecco claims: “I upgraded to version 2.5.1. None of my RSS link pages work. The shortcode is rendered as text in some cases. I’ve tried subbing other plugins but nothing works.”

Jermayn Parker askes: “Any chance this will fix the upload images problem??”

As a matter of fact I cannot deny that this update has been applauded too, nevertheless troubles usually tend to catch the attention more.

A tip for those with the password reset problem is pretty much explained by Ryan McCue a 14 year old WordPress user & developer, it’s a manual way of reseting the password through phpMyAdmin.
Finally, all those who don’t have the opportunity to access phpMyAdmin I’d be glad to make you aware that this known issues have been already fixed but are expected to be released with the future 2.5.2 update.

Update: if by any means waiting for the 2.5.2 update seems too long, Ryan has done a modest work for everyone and compressed the changed files into a .zip archive, so you could overwrite the actuals with the working ones. Hence the patch is available, but of course I take no responsibility if anything goes wrong, consider me more than away from the computer after you’ve read this.

Ever wondered what a Web2.0 application looked like? Or probably you used one but never thought it is one of that kind. WebWare.com is the site where computer users can learn about new and useful Web applications, hence they’ve announced the top 100 winning Web 2.0 applications based on over 1.9 million user votes.

Each of these web applications has been classified in categories like: audio, browsing, commerce and events, communication, productivity, publishing and photography, search and reference, social, utility and security, and video. Unsurprisingly over 15% of all are Google’s products, following comes Yahoo! then Microsoft. There are a lot other apps which I haven’t heard of and not even tested yet, a lot of fun is waiting in front of me, however, I’m also glad to see WordPress on the list, because it fully deserves the award, oh yeah, and Firefox as well, yeah and Vimeo too, and Flickr, and Last.fm, and Gmail, and… (running out of air, need a breath!).

“Microsoft may own the desktop, but not the Web. Online, Google has solid productivity apps.”

Tragical social-technological weekend

I_Love_My_Family_Stickers Attempting to find some relaxation, spiritual comfort and entertainment for almost every rare weekend I get to go home, this very last one I totally failed. During all the three days I was able to stay home, I felt like a bear with a sore head, simply, nothing seemed fair and reasonable. First turbulent cause was the illness of my mother plus she broke her leg on the day I arrived home. Despite of the despair I’m aware such things happen on life, and life is full of discouragement. Nevertheless it put my Saturday to an end. Then again, incoming empathy from her and other family members I manage to get over it, but there’s some strange feeling which I kept following me whenever I went, regardless of the situation and circumstances. There were other events which need to be emphasized either for good or for bad, it’s quiet odd though but the good once are fewer, indeed not few but one and that’s one only. Except arguing with everyone surrounding me, barely but at the end came out good, I finished the 13th episode of my on-air radio emission HelixTECH, plus I was asked to be recorded for a radio ad. Those too things build up my Saturday 24h interval. All this was about the social tragical part.

As a human-daily routine is applied usually, I woke up on Sunday hoping for a better day. Unfortunately the opposite is to come and I wasn’t able to realize that early that day. They saying “with the new day comes new strength and new thoughts.” was so untrue for the Sunday. I know I didn’t told you but two months ago I changed my ISP from Telenetronics to IPKO, I did that for I reconsidered my needs and options, yet wishing for better comfort. Telenetronics offers a wireless connection whereas IPKO has a broadband one. Anyway, while working for a client’s web site from the morning till half afternoon I got disconnected couple of times unnoticeably. Called the customer service withe the hope of getting a wise advice from them, but all they said to me was “unplug the power cable from the modem, wait for 10 minutes and then try to connect back it should work. Although it looked a little odd to me I followed their advice and it actually did work. But seemed to be a routine though for it happened again and again. Last time it occurred, while I was returning from the bathroom I wiped the smiley off my face as I see the USB cable in fire and smoke across my laptop. Shocked but not panicking took out the cable from the laptop’s USB port and plug-off the power. Laptop leds where flickering and no display on the screen. At first, I assumed my lovely HP Pavilion dv6000 was gone, but after two hours I realize only the USB ports are burned and nonworking. It was tremendous story but overloading you with every detail I consider unnecessary and trying to save you a bit from the agony. Eventually, the conversation total duration between me and the IPKO customer service for the last 24hours was kinda 4 to 5 hours with like 8-9 phone calls.
The way they talked to me made me feel like I was an ignorant, a moron and stupid, or perhaps that was all they know to say and simply don’t know any better. Their only excuse was “we’re so sorry, we wish we could help more but we can’t.

What’s interesting in the hole tale is the fact that on the last Friday I read a post from my colleague Valoni, titled “Customer Service is Great…NOT!“, where he complains about ITS’ (another ISP in Kosova) customer service. Back then it was fun and entertaining to see what is actually is possible to happen to people, but never thought two days later something even worse would happen to me. With all this probably you can imagine how I felt during this weekend at home. I complete this post with the hope and strong will to not happen something similar to none of you, and wishing you live and experience the best moments at your homes, with your families. I do though, for I love my family.

Wordpress 2.5.1 update available with over 70 bug fixes

There is a very used saying in Albanian, or expression if I can call it so which says “if you rush, you’ll get screwed“. It doesn’t rhyme in English but it’s meaning is powerful whatsoever. The WordPress 2.5 scenario is fully suitable with the above expression, but fortunately for us we didn’t get screwed, not yet at least. They’ve rushed to release the 2.5 milestone and now less than a month later an update is available for download which addresses over 70 bugs and performance enhancements.

Early when I posted about WordPress 2.5 final you would have noticed a citation about due in 22 years release interval which turned to be less than two days (in Automattic’s way of time calculation), but back than I’d wait for those very long 22 years to finish (not literally) and release a stable, completed, secure version rather than being hasty just to spread the word.

Ryan from the WordPress developers team announced today the first update of WordPress 2.5.x series while highlighting main changes, enhancements and fixes.

  • Performance improvements for the Dashboard, Write Post, and Edit Comments pages.
  • Better performance for those who have many categories
  • Media Uploader fixes
  • An upgrade to TinyMCE 3.0.7
  • Widget Administration fixes
  • Various usability improvements
  • Layout fixes for IE

According to his post, the team recommends us to immediately update, even if I don’t like messing with the system hourly, but who does ?

We recommend everyone update immediately, particularly if your blog has open registration. The vulnerability is not public but it will be shortly.

Despite of all this we are forced to do so when our personal blog security is in question, so we just take the time and go for it. After all I wonder when the next unexpected update is going to come out.

Update: I would be amazed though and couldn’t even dare to say anything at all if by all means a new update would bring with an option to update WordPress from within the admin panel. Thumbs down to the old boring procedure.

Eventually, I managed the time to get back in the show, it’s been a while though, yet still feels nice and it’s fun to be in it.

In this week’s episode, Chris, Daniel, and Arian (me), discuss HD adoption, whether Vista spies for Microsoft, MS Works goes ad-supported, ISP manipulation of net traffic, the 3G Apple iPhone, the recent update to blogging software WordPress, online video hosting service added to Flickr, Microsoft makes changes to their support site, and PayPal gets flak for treatment of Safari.

Steve Jobs introduces the Apple "i" product

Nowadays we’re a witness of latest technology rivals in various areas. As one company tends to beat the other by whatever characteristics, Apple is well known with it’s products’ unique stylish, shiny and soft beautiful outlook, with revolutionary designs, but “of course, revolution is nothing new to Apple.”

What did impress me is the fact he calls the “i” a she, and moreover comparing it’s “shiny-chromy-glassy curve with a curve of a woman, soft, supple, longing for your touch, waking up and making you breakfast, orange juice, toast and scrambled eggs, is it love?”. Well, no doubt it is.

Throughout the presentation, might have been though from the emotions and joy he experienced while announcing this new product, bald (fake) Steve Jobs not only “says it, he also sprays it.” You could notice that on the 0:32th second sharp.
