Ever wished GMail had themes ?

gmail-logo We all love it for it’s simplicity, or at least I do. However, some source claims that Gmail soon will get built-in themes available for it’s users.

I’m not even going into wondering of how the themes will look like or how many of them will be, but what pushes me to write about this, is the thought of why didn’t they make it earlier. Google’s engagement has certainly been much higher upon dealing with troubles caused by other competitors and other particular things rather than worrying about Gmail themes. Plus it could be intentional but the BETA tag still remains there, 4 years and 3 months since it’s initial launch a lot could have been accomplished, considering the fact of Google having 19,156 full-time employees under its giant empire, yet it remains there.

Ultimately, users are able to change the look & feel of GMail, but that in an indirect way of approach, through a GreesMonkey script, using a Firefox extension called Stylish with one, two, three or more user created styles, and again through another Firefox add-on.

If you ask me, there’s no certain need to do that, whether or not Gmail is skinnable makes no real impression to me.
Its functionality is what I like the most.

How Microsoft products are doing

This last month, meaning during the March I’ve been using a WordPress plug-in called StatPress which collects date about users visiting my blog like type of browser used, operating system, referral links etc., whereby I was able to get a clue of what really is going on, at some point solving dilemmas and doubts regarding the real stats about the usage of Windows Vista and Internet Explorer 7. This two products have raised much attention lately, as in media also in the customers’ side. Although almost two months have passed since I started blogging and yet I don’t have much of daily visits nor traffic, nevertheless, seems to be more than enough to realize what is really used and what ‘abandoned‘. A series of screenshots will display all the necessary information to show you some prove, and reinforce my opinion upon getting rid of maybe Vista but especially IE7, although I already did get off the last one. Before all, I never liked IE, I don’t now and obviously never will. When it comes to Vista I do have it currently installed on my laptop, what’s important is without SP1 yet, but haven’t totally despaired me yet even though I’m impatiently waiting for the Service Pack 3 of XP so the chances I’ll downgrade back to XP are more than possible. Again, against all the Microsoft temptations to save Vista no trust could have been implemented to the Windows users, I don’t support Vista banishment but neither am I on Microsoft’s side to XP assimilation, of course I could mention millions of reasons for that but that’s not my point in this post. See images below for a stronger convincement meantime note that the stats were captured on 1st of April.

Most read topic:
top_pages
This pictures shows that “WordPress 2.5 final is here, 22 years ended up so fast” has been the most read topic of all, it’s not impressive though because the link was listed as a pingback in WordPress official release announcement. However, this stats also helped me realize what are readers more up to so I can take that as an advantage for future writings, although I’m doing it very rarely.

Most browsers used:
top_browser The picture speaks by itself, basically it wouldn’t be necessary to say anything in addition here but I simply can’t leave just like that without saying at least something. As we can see on top of the list stays Firefox, the browser that doesn’t promise anything but gives everything. This is the actual Browser War II which is currently happening. The second most used doubtlessly is Internet Explorer 6, the all-time browser, the one which took Netscape down and is staying right behind Firefox back, so that in the worst case scenarios to step-over and take its first lost place back again (God forbid). Now after that lies the main critical part of which I was talking about in the beginning of this post. You can pretty much notice yourself for it’s pretty much obvious though, the abandonment of IE7 as stated above. Honestly it’s strange but it is true, as a matter of fact is the reality of what’s really happening. Initially, when IE7 arrived it was expected to bring us amusement, reliability and safety, for me none of those came, ever. But surprisingly I’m not the only one thinking that way I can tell, for as referring to the stats seems like IE5 is yet being more used than IE7, a fact that I undeniably love to see. Therefore, I can conclude that IE7 is not being favored by Windows users, and pretty much is a hopeless and failed product of Microsoft. Whereas following on the list are all other browsers like Safari, Opera, Camino, Firefox 3 and more but with a fewer usage, again if we would sum the numbers of these yet it will be bigger than IE7’s itself.

Most Operating Systems used:
top_os
Now, another worth discussing part is the Operating Systems usage. Despite all Microsoft bad-tempered temptations to contempt it’s very own but users much loved product Windows XP, it still is the most actual used OS. XP usage is far much used than Vista is, which makes Vista negligible and abandoned. Vista has a lot of cool new features I must admit, for some of which I really acknowledge Microsoft’s work, however, majority of the audience has been familiarized with XP the last 5 years and therefore jumping from XP to Vista is being considered a waste for there are things to get used to and that is not welcomed because is time consuming and people must work to ensure a life for themselves. Even delaying the release of SP3 is not helping discourage customers from XP, the favor and reputation XP has makes everyone feel infinitely comfortable and confident, SP2 is more than enough. But the real disappointment had happened with the postponement of Vista SP1, that actually is what pissed everyone off. Yeah I can hear you say but it’s available now, of course it is, after what 1 year and 4 months after Vista’s release, what about all the issues within that interval ?! Anyways, following on the list is another Microsoft OS but a discontinued one and that is Windows 2000, my first NT OS I ever installed.

Eventually, the wise guys at Microsoft are playing strategically to deflect this two very own products and especially XP, however their plan seems to not be prosperous, disregard of that I can conclude that Windows XP and Internet Explorer 6 are the two everlasting products Microsoft has developed, hence it’s hardly possible they could come near to that success ever again. Nowadays claiming that XP is a users/customers product and not Microsoft anymore for my opinion would be more than justified. In the other hand, IE6 is the most buggiest browser ever seen, yet is the most used browser of all times. Honestly, looking forward that Firefox will bang it and believe me it will. Oops!! I has actually.

Rest in peace Navigator!

With a whacking history and a high importance on the past of technology, today came to it’s end the last product of one of the biggest names in the history of web called Netscape. The melting of Netscape Communications into AOL in late 1998 is considered as one of the greatest acquisitions of the history of Internet, besides, AOL is one of the first and largest companies to get people online, again, today they decided to end support and not to mention further developing one of pioneer browsers ever offered to the community. Stating that:

AOL’s focus on transitioning to an ad-supported web business leaves little room for the size of investment needed to get the Netscape browser to a point many of its fans expect it to be. Given AOL’s current business focus and the success the Mozilla Foundation has had in developing critically-acclaimed products, we feel it’s the right time to end development of Netscape branded browsers, hand the reins fully to Mozilla and encourage Netscape users to adopt Firefox.

Nevertheless, AOL continued (until today) to provide support and release new versions of Netscape’s browser under the same name, apparently it came to the point where they reconsidered the roads to the profit, also their current business focus as stated above, finally realized that carrying-on to develop the browser it’s unworthy and promises no real benefit to the company. There are various reasons regarding this, but whatsoever may them be before going further I demand that we hold a minute of silence on my honor to the browser in question. Thank you.

Countdown: 1, 2, 3, 4, . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 58, 59, 60. Glory!!!

Although I myself wasn’t a user of Netscape Navigator nevertheless I admire what they did back then, their work had a big influence in the wide community of Internet users. Poor Netscape wasn’t able to wisely get over the competitive war of concurrent rival browsers. Plus, even in those moments when Netscape owned its deserved great popularity during the 1995, many other rival companies showed up on the scene with the same intention; delivering it’s own browsers to the customers and beating up the competitors.
One of those was the market monster called Microsoft with it’s rival browser dubbed Internet Explorer (formerly known as MSIE). Obviously, Netscape missed a descent strategy, since they became so famous they stopped inventing new features and shipping almost every version late. Soon enough their market share was experiencing a layoff, Microsoft in the other side conquered the market through it’s monopolistic strategy while shipping Windows OS with IE inside this way achieving it’s goal to “cut off Netscape’s air supply“. This race between Netscape Navigator and MS Internet Explorer in history is known as the Browser War I. Microsoft put an end to it!

As for Netscape basically there was nothing else to wait for but only planing for a withdrawal. In the end of 1997 Netscape’s glory started to run out, couple of months later they made Navigator’s source code open for the public meanwhile initiating the Mozilla project. One year after, there was no hope left for Netscape, which resulted in being bought by and continuing to work that way as a subsidiary of AOL.
Since then, AOL wasn’t providing any fresh features or new inventions via Navigator, also it evolved based on the functional Mozilla’s code, so to further endeavor was how unnecessary even more unworthy.

Jamie Zawinski, one of the first Netscape workers, later the head person of the Mozilla project, explains the situation after Netscape released it’s code to the public and some of the circumstances that caused Netscape to fall apart, highlighting the main drawbacks of what they did wrong back in 1998, also claiming his personal thoughts about AOL.

At this point, I strongly believed that Netscape was no longer capable of shipping products. Netscape’s engineering department had lost the single-minded focus we once had, on shipping something useful and doing it fast. That was no longer happening. Netscape was shipping garbage, and shipping it late.

And daring move or no, this was not going to change: Netscape no longer had the talent, either in engineering or management, to ship quality products. The magic was gone, as the magicians had either moved on to more compelling companies, or were having their voices lost in the din of the crowd, swamped by the mediocrity around them.

The Netscape I cared about was dead.

If you’re still curious to read further and get a closer look or better understanding of Jamie’s opinion, I suggest you read the resignation and postmortem article of his. With other words all this, the death of Netscape to be more concrete had happened nearly ten years ago.

Although, we’ll still be able to download Navigator from the archives and the Netscape portal will continue to function as duplicate portal of the one at AOL.com, nevertheless Netscape will navigate the world wide web no more.

Today, on the Netscape Portal down-right of the page we can notice their recommendation to us for switching to either Firefox or Flock. For me Flock’s interface is a little bit overloaded, hence Firefox is what I recommend too therefore, I think it ends up as the descent solution.

I wonder why Flock is listed first, but anyway, this is a small-time thing, with no importance.
To your informing, currently we are living the the second browser war.

Eventually, Netscape’s rise and fall throughout all this years reminds me of a Phoenix who today came to it’s ultimate decease.

iPad Theme for WordPress *Updated*

Discontinued

iPad is my first theme I designed for my personal weblog but upon creation decided to offer it as a free download for the public.
It is a simplistic, light-weight and widget ready two-column WordPress theme that displays right on both popular browsers Firefox and Internet Explorer.
Currently tested only on WordPress 2.3.x but from other comments seems to works just fine even on previous WordPress versions (like WP 2.1.x & WP 2.2.x).
Hard-coded on Notepad2, hence, for the sake of that and for the sake of my lovely iPod Nano third generation I decided to take the first letter from iPod and the last three letters from Notepad and append them together, in the end it came out iPad.

History:

1.1 ~ Update: Sidebar reconstruction and <h2> post title restyle
~ Update: Added more html tag styling
~ Update: Proper code indention for better readability
~ New: Comment form restyled
~ Fix: Recent Posts failed to load the styling
~ Fix: Theme now looks the same in Internet Explorer and Firefox

1.0.1 ~ Fix: Blockquote image wasn’t positioning correctly.

1.0.0 ~ Initial release

Known issues:

* Sidebar floats to the left and goes under the content of the page if browsers window narrows.
Tried everything but currently I cannot realize why it does that and neither I can manage to correct it.

Feel free to give suggestions ;)

My first WordPress theme for public

Yeah… Ha Ha!
Finally someone let me out of my cage
Now, time for me is nothing cos I’m counting no age
Now I couldn’t be there
Now you shouldn’t be scared
I’m good at repairs
And I’m under each snare

I always wanted to create my own WP theme, but never got enough amount of time to make one. One day I found the Smilies Themer WordPress Plugin by Ricardo González, I translated the default.po file in Albanian language and sent it to Rick, but I realized that I somehow liked his theme and asked Rick if he would be generous to handing it out to me for I wanted to make it my default blog theme. But for some strange reasons or not strange at all maybe he hesitated, and what I got from him was very much ‘anger’ which stimulated me to turn my inner engine on and decide to create my own theme. For this I am very grateful to Rick. Thank you Rick, I owe you.

Hence, today I’m very glad to announce my first WordPress theme release for the public, I feel very exited meantime very honored that I am getting involved in the wide WordPress community, or at least be a part of it.

Currently it is only optimized for FireFox and honestly I don’t have that much time to fix it for Internet Explorer yet, thus feel free to download and work on it if you’re willing to do so, of course it is free of charge. Certainly if you fix and send it back to me corrected, I’ll acknowledge you with putting your name on my site as a valuable contributor. I ain’t paying cuz I ain’t earning anything out of it.

You maybe wondering why I named it iPad, it is simple as that, every piece of code was written from scratch using Notepad2 from Flos-freeware.ch, I also recently got my iPod, thus what I did was cut down both names and put it in a new one.

Anyways, there is no demo provided because it’s not necessary, as far as I’m currently using iPad.

And at last, I do not demand that you leave the footer link at all, but I’d be thankful if you refer somehow to me as a greeting for using my theme. I require this only because this is the beginning of me entering the WordPress theme developers community, thus I need to know that my theme is being favored. Thanks in advance. :)

Update: The blockquote fix is perfectly working on localhost but not on my server, it made me a little nervous but I’m trying to handle it with patience. If you willing to play with my style.css file feel free to do so, because I am not even planning to jump on it soon.
Nevermind, got rid of the code line height: 100%; it is ok on both FF and IE now ;)

Version History

1.0.1 – 02/03/2008

  • Fix: Blockquote wasn’t being displayed correctly

1.0.0 – 1/30/2008

  • Initial release

Note: For all Internet Explorer users, the WP Download Monitor Pluting I’m using does not display the image on IE, if you’re willing to download iPad follow this link, iPad Theme
