Ever since I learned about bulletin board systems I was quite curious about them, began familiarizing with most of them, on_off and especially being fortunate to moderate some of public ones online (had one myself but it’s lifespan was two years only). Most of them differ considering various specifics, like features, functionality, license, administration, ease of extensibility etc. De facto all serve for the same purpose, however choosing between one or another is usually a matter of customers preference. Anyways, there’s a feature I’d like to see in WordPress too that exists in most of those bulletin board systems like IP.Board, phpBB and some others, that is the option to put our blog offline/online varying the circumstances. For example if we’re transferring our blog from a server to another, or customizing the look but first want to test it ourselves and such cases where we don’t like our visitor/reader to face the unenviable changes our blog goes through. Therefore as we’re getting closer to the Google Summer of Code 2008 I thought it is required to suggested this idea on WordPress Ideas page so maybe this feature would be considered and taken into account for I think it’ll be beneficial for us to have that opportunity. This is what I posted:

Every existing feature is pretty much well welcomed, but there’s one that might be handy and come into work to most of us. This idea come up on my mind while in this very morning I decided to upgrade to 2.5 and here it is. Before we upgrade we’re required to deactivate all the plug-ins, but in some cases our blog layout is based on some of those plug-ins so when deactivated it’ll ruin the look and it’s not pretty to have a disordered outlook in front of the visitors and readers. Hence, I thought it might be more than useful if a feature could be implemented allowing us to put our blog offline and back online with a single radio button or checkbox and an option to display some informative text of what’s going on. This way we could simply notify our readers that about the reason why the blog is offline and it’s duration for how long it’ll stay so. I think most of bulletin board systems offer this possibility.
Bytheway a feature implemented in wordpress would be much better than a separate plug-in that offers that opportunity. What are your thoughts about this ?
